Abstract

The foundation activities undertaken by rulers for the benefit of the Church occupy an important place in medieval narrative sources. Numerous references to this topic can also be found in the Annales of Jan Długosz. They concern both the sacral foundations by Polish rulers and endeavors pursued in this field by rulers from other countries, including Ruthenia. This article aims to present the foundation activities undertaken by Ruthenian princes for the benefit of the Eastern Church in light of Długosz's Annales. The study focuses on identifying the founders of churches, the circumstances and motives behind their construction, their locations, as well as the burials made within their walls. I draw attention to the attitude of Jan Długosz toward the sanctity of the Eastern Church in the material aspect and to the way in which he perceived and understood the sacrum.
